The Telangana High Court has issued significant rulings regarding law course admissions in the state. The Division Bench, led by Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J Sreenivas Rao, directed the Telangana Council for Higher Education, Convenor of TG LAWCET and PGLCET 2024, Bar Council of India, and Osmania University to classify transgender candidates as a separate category entitled to horizontal reservation. This decision follows a writ plea by Mallula Nagasri challenging the lack of horizontal reservation for transgender persons in the existing admission rules. The court relied on the Supreme Court’s NALSA v. Union of India judgment to support its decision.
In a separate case, Justice T. Vinod Kumar admitted a writ petition from Polakatla Babu Jagjeevan, seeking recognition as a local candidate in the Telangana LAWCET examination. Jagjeevan, a Telangana native, pursued his B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture degree in Maharashtra but argued that he qualifies as a local candidate based on his parents’ permanent residency and his education in Telangana. The court has directed notices and scheduled further hearings for August 27.
