The Department of Legal Affairs functions under the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India. It was set up in 1961 and plays a key role in offering legal services and advice at the central level.

About the Opportunity

The Department of Legal Affairs offers an Internship Programme for law students and graduates to give them firsthand exposure to the Department’s operations. Interns are trained in legal research, court proceedings, and legal advisory work across several domains including constitutional, administrative, finance, infrastructure, economic, labour, contract, arbitration, and conveyancing laws.

Eligibility

Indian nationals who have completed their 2nd year in a 3-year law program or 3rd year in a 5-year law course, as well as law graduates from recognized institutions, are eligible. Preference will be given to those proficient in MS Office, Adobe, infographics, and other computer tools.

Duration of Internship

The internship usually lasts for one month and starts on the first working day of each month unless stated otherwise.

Procedure to Apply

Applicants must submit the application form along with the required documents and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their college or university. Graduates are not required to submit a NOC but must upload their final year certificate. The application form is available on the Department’s website at https://legalaffairs.gov.in/internship. Applications must be submitted online before the deadline mentioned on the site.

Selection

Each month, 50 interns are selected based on shortlisted applications. Selected candidates will be notified via the Internship Portal or through email communication.

Deployment

Selected interns will be posted either at the Main Secretariat in New Delhi or at the Central Agency Section in the Supreme Court, the High Court Litigation Section in Delhi, or Branch Secretariats in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.

Location

The internship is available across multiple locations including New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.

Submission of Report

Interns are required to submit a monthly report at the end of their tenure, along with the completed research assignments. Reports are to be submitted to Admin-1(LA).

Certificate of Internship

An internship certificate will be issued upon successful completion, which includes 90% attendance and satisfactory feedback from the supervisor. This is a full-time, in-person internship and interns are not allowed to take up any other commitments during the internship period.

Termination

The Department reserves the right to terminate the internship of any intern at any point without the need to provide a reason.

Terms & Conditions

Interns must arrange their own accommodation and be present from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM unless directed otherwise. They are expected to adhere to the rules and conduct standards of the Department and must sign a confidentiality agreement. This internship does not guarantee future employment. Interns should follow instructions regarding any third-party interactions. Access to the Department library is limited to reference use, and borrowing is not permitted. Photocopies may be taken. In case of poor performance, the intern may be asked to discontinue. If the intern wishes to leave early, prior notice is required. The dress code mandates formal attire—black trousers with a white shirt. Selected interns must coordinate with their assigned offices for entry passes; those in the Main Secretariat should approach Admin. II(LA).

Honorarium

Upon successful completion, interns may receive an honorarium of ₹1,000.
